Are VeEX's Portable Test Sets (Products) Required to Comply with EU's USB-C Common Charging Directive?

NO, Europe's mandate to make USB-C PD charging ports universal for portable radio equipment (RED) is limited to a list of specific consumer products

To reduce the number of different chargers needed by consumers, in 2022 the European Parliament and member states voted to eliminate the different custom charging methods, meaning that small and medium-sized portable electronic devices, with radio equipment, sold in the EU must be compatible with USB-C PD ports and cables for charging. IEC 62680-1-2:2022 Power Delivery (PD) protocol support is required for devices drawing more than 15W (3A, 5V).

Note: There are different levels of USB-C PD chargers and cables, and some can handle up to 240W. However, not all USB-C cables are equal, and specific cables are required for the different current and voltage levels.

Two amendments of the Radio Equipment Directive (RED) 2014/53/EU introduced the common charging solution:

COMPLIANCE STATEMENT

While the majority of VeEX's test sets fall under the classification of Portable devices, and a subset can also be categorized as Radio Equipment—specifically those equipped with built-in Wi-Fi and/or Bluetooth functionalities—they do not fall within the scope of the common charging port mandate. This exclusion is due to the fact that the EU 2022/2380 directive applies exclusively to the specific consumer products listed in Annex Ia.

Nevertheless, at VeEX we recognize the advantages of using the standard USB-C PD (Power Delivery) for charging and data transfer applications. In fact, USB-C PD charging has already been added to newer products (2024), such as the V90 platform (e.g., PX90, FX92, WX90) and OTT.

Other USB-C Charging Requirements for Consumer Electronics

  • In April 2023, California's state Assembly Privacy and Consumer Protection committee passed the AB-1659 bill to require USB-C charging for phones and laptops manufactured after 2026.
  • India is expected to implement USB-C charging standards in March 2025.
  • In June 2024 Taiwan's National Communications Commission (NCC) reviewed its regulations to adopt USB-C charging standards.
They don't apply to VeEX products either.
